Glass,
layer by layer

One small studio. How a portrait is cut, layered and framed, and what to know before you order one.

The studio bench under a window: a Bernese mountain dog portrait taking shape in layered glass on a linen board inside its walnut frame, small dishes of loose glass pieces sorted by colour around it, fine tweezers, a tube of adhesive and a folded grey cloth
A portrait of a laughing baby with curls in pearl and peach layered glass on linen, in a dark shadow-box frame on a pale oak sideboard beside a small olive tree and a folded cream knit

The material

Real glass,
not a print

A print is flat. Ours is not a print: the portrait is sculpted in glass, each piece cut to its shape and layered one over the next into dimensional relief, so it stands up off the linen and throws its own small shadows. Move past it and the light moves across the face.

The shadow box is deep enough to hold the relief: the glass is there to be seen, and touched.

Good to know

Shipping, returns
and care

Shipping

Built and packed in our studio, its corners protected, and tracked end to end. It reaches most addresses in about five weeks. The estimate for yours is shown before you pay.

Before you buy

Made for one person, so it is not returnable. Ask us anything before you buy and we will answer properly, usually the same day. The approved design is what we build.

Hanging & care

It arrives ready to hang on the shadow box's own fitting. Dust it with a soft dry brush or a cold hairdryer rather than a cloth: the surface is layered glass. Keep it out of hours of strong direct sun, which yellows the linen in time.
