Portrait, name, quote or sign: which Glassculpt piece?

From the same glass, linen and walnut, Glassculpt makes a portrait alone, a portrait with a name of up to 20 characters, a portrait with a quote of up to 80 characters on one to three lines, and a words-only sign of up to 60 characters on up to four lines, which needs no photo at all.

What are the options?

A portrait from your photo, with or without lettering under it, or lettering alone with no photo. Every option is built the same way, in layered glass on linen in a walnut shadow box, at 30 × 30 or 50 × 50 cm.

When is a name enough?

When the piece is about one pet or one person and the name is the whole point. Up to 20 characters go under the portrait: a name, two names, or a name and years.

The name is optional and typed under your photo on the create page. The ready-made pieces in the shop carry nobody's name, so a name is always yours to add rather than something to remove. For a pet who has gone, a name and years fit the limit: Max 2011-2025.

When does a quote earn its place?

When there is something to say beneath the face. The quote is up to 80 characters on one to three centred lines, picked from the list on the create page or written yourself.

  • Hope is the thing with feathers.
  • Home sweet home
  • Always by my side
  • Thankful for you
  • Two lines of Shakespeare and one of Jane Austen, on the list on the create page

The listed lines are public-domain quotes and simple phrases; your own line is just as welcome. A portrait can carry a name and a quote together, the name within its 20 characters and the quote within its 80, and you see both in the drawn design before approving.

When is a sign the right piece?

When there is no face to show, or the words are the gift. A sign is raised glass lettering on linen with no portrait: up to 60 characters on up to four lines, and no photo needed.

The shop's signs show the range: Home Sweet Home under a small glass house, Love Lives Here over a red glass heart, Good Dogs Only with the dog's name under a glass paw print, and a family name with the year, The Millers, est. 2019. The famous quotes, Shakespeare's and Emily Dickinson's, are signs too. They all open on the words tab in the shop, where you pick a line or type your own.

Can the words go above the portrait, or be combined?

Yes, through the ready designs. A plain name sits beneath the portrait; the holiday and occasion designs put words in an arc above it, add a date below, or set small glass holly, autumn leaves or forget-me-nots in the corners.

Our First Christmas arcs its words above a pet with holly in the lower corners; Mr & Mrs sets two gold glass rings between the words and the couple, with the wedding date below; Always by my side puts the name and years under a pet with white glass forget-me-nots at one side. Each opens the create page with its wording and layout set, and you add the photo. Whichever you choose, the glass, the linen and the walnut are the same, as the materials page sets out.

Questions this leaves

Do I have to use a quote from the list?

No. The list is a starting point; write your own line of up to 80 characters instead, and it is set in glass on one to three centred lines under the portrait. The same goes for a sign: pick one of the shop's lines or type up to 60 characters of your own.

Can a sign carry a name?

Yes. Good Dogs Only is a sign with the dog's name under the paw print, and the family name sign carries a surname and a year. The whole sign, name included, fits in 60 characters on up to four lines.

Is lettering printed or glass?

Glass. A name, a quote or a sign is raised glass lettering on the linen, built up the same way as the portrait and finished in the same walnut shadow box. Nothing on the piece is printed.

What if the lettering comes back wrong?

Edit it and let the design draw again; no charge is made until one is approved. If a piece comes back with lettering you did not ask for, remove it or correct it the same way before approving, because the approved design is what gets built.
